So last Tuesday was Valentine’s, and to jazz things up I decided to take Nina to the cinema – film choice was The Woman In Black. Why was this so unusual, I hear you ask? Simple I loathe horror films! I don’t seem to get very scared by them and generally I find the stories to be less than compelling. The last horror film I sat through was Paranormal Activity, a film, which to be honest pretty much sent me to sleep. So this was the first ever horror film, I’ve ever been to see at the pictures!
However when I was younger I do remember staying up and watching re-runs of old Hammer Horror flicks. The tension created by the films, seemed to keep me on my toes. Yes some of it was corny but they are my fondest memories of the horror genre. You can all rant and rave now! Anyways so we went to the cinema, I’ll be honest I was totally expecting to lose interest very, very quickly. The film began and I was totally shocked to see the Hammer Horror logo appear and my intrigue was piqued. I didn’t know much about the film, and to find out that this was in fact a Hammer Horror, seemed to flood me with loads of childhood memories. So with a sly grin I sat back and began to watch the story unfold!
I have to say this film had me on the edge of my seat the whole way through, tension built to breaking point before something or someone would catch your eye lurking in the back ground of the scene – for me this was a pure supernatural spooky tale, which unfolded like a giant spiders web to entangle your brain and play with every one of your emotions. A true roller coaster of a film!
Daniel Radcliffe has grown in my estimation, proving that there’s more to him than a boy with a scar. Bringing his character to life and making it a character you begin to relate to. It’s certainly a film just waiting to be discovered by a lot of people, a film that really made me change some of my built up ideas of the horror genre…
